Do Surgical Scars Fade Over Time?

While it’s typically impossible for a scar to completely fade over time, there are many options when it comes to improving the appearance of a surgical scar thanks to treatments such as creams and medical silicone.

Are you someone who is about to have surgery and already concerned about their scar healing as soon as possible? Keep reading for easy ways to make sure it heals as smoothly and quickly it can.

What To Do First

Often, the conventional wisdom might suggest letting the scar air-out or breathe. That’s actually not what you should be doing if you are looking for the scar to fade as soon as possible. Letting it breathe will lead to a thick scab which will block the production of new skin cells that would heal the surgical wound.

To be clear, this means doing nothing. This just refers to not having it wrapped up. As soon as possible, you should start using ointments or creams on the area.

Also, don’t skip out on applying sunscreen to the scarred area if you plan on spending any extended amount of time outside. This will aid in reducing discoloration of the scar as well as being one additional step in its healing sooner.

Keep Applying Silicone

As ointments and creams were mentioned earlier, being in the habit of regularly applying either silicone scar tape or a topical gel (which one will likely depend on the size of the scar) can help in improving not only the texture of the scar, but also the color and height of it making it all around less visible. In addition, regular application of medical silicone will also act as a barrier between your scar and any outside bacteria.

While the application of silicon acts as a barrier, it will improve the appearance, allowing for more hydration and curbing the overproduction of collagen. As long as you still feel it is making a difference in healing your scar, feel free to continue applying either the gel or tape during the months following the surgery and leaving it on for most of the day.

Add In A Few New Habits

On top of what else has been mentioned, getting in the habit of massaging your scar daily. All you’ll have to do is place pressure around where the scar tissue can be felt and message it back and forth in circles. Continue to do this daily until you feel the skin returning to normal.

How possible this next bit of advice depends on both what your daily life is like and where your scar is, but once you are recovered from the surgery, still try to go easy on where the scar is.

Even if under the skin is healed, try to not put much tension of pressure on where the scar is. For example, if your scar is on your bicep, maybe readjust your workout regimen to avoid putting the typical pressure on where the scar is on your body.
